This tutorial explains how to install FileZilla FTP client program in Ubuntu Linux. It also explains how to use the FileZilla without installation.
A brief intro of FileZilla
FileZilla is the open source FTP client program. It uses FTP/SFTP protocol to transfer the files. It allows us to securely transfer files from the local computer to the remote computer.
It is mostly used by the web developers in the uploading, downloading and editing web pages. Webpages are stored in the server computer. It allows us to manage these pages directly from the local computer.
Installing FileZilla FTP client in Ubuntu
There are two ways to install the FileZilla in Ubuntu; through Ubuntu Software center and through the apt-get command line utility. Let’s understand both methods in details with practical examples.
Installing FileZilla from the Ubuntu Software Center
To install FileZilla from the Ubuntu Software Center, connect the system to the Internet and launch Ubuntu Software Center from the left menu bar.
In Ubuntu Software Center, click the Search icon available in the top right position of the window. In Search box, search the term FileZilla.
From search results, click the result that represents the FileZilla.
Search result may contain several similar results. Make sure you select the correct search result.
Clicking a search result displays detailed information about that result in a new window. This window also contains an Install button
which allows us to install that software.
Click the Install button to install the FileZilla.
Installing FileZilla from command line
To install FileZilla from command line, use the following commands.
$sudo apt-get update $sudo apt-get install filezilla
First command synchronizes the configured repositories. This command is used to ensure that always the latest version of the software is installed.
Second command connects to the repository and checks the version and file size of the available FileZilla in repository. It prints both information on the screen and takes confirmation for the installation. If permission is granted, it downloads the FileZilla from the repository and installs that.
To confirm the installation, when asked, type y and press the enter key.
Launching the FileZilla
Once FileZilla has been installed, you can launch it from the application launcher. To start it, click the application launcher icon.
In the search box of the opened window, search the term FileZilla. From the result, click the FileZilla icon.
Unless, you rarely use FileZilla or don\’t have the sufficient privilege for installation,
I highly suggest you to use the standard methods of installation as explained above.
Custom installation/Using FileZilla without installation
Installing FileZilla through the above explained method requires root privilege. Due to any reason if you don’t want to install the FileZilla or do not have sufficient privilege for installation, you can use the FileZilla without installation.
To use FileZilla without installation, download the latest version of FileZilla from its official website.
Once file is downloaded, create a folder in your home directory and copy the downloaded file in it.
To do this, open a terminal and run the following commands.
$cd $pwd $mkdir FileZilla $cd Downloads/ $ls $cp downloaded-file-name /home/user-name/FileZilla $cd $cd FileZilla/ $ls
The cd command sets the current working directory to the supplied directory. If directory name is not supplied, it sets the current working directory to the home directory of user.
The pwd command prints the absolute path of the current working from the root directory.
The mkdir command creates new directory.
The ls command lists the contents of the supplied directory. If directory name is not supplied, it lists the contents of the current working directory.
The cp command makes a copy of the supplied source file into the supplied destination directory.
Now, extract the downloaded file through the following command.
$tar -xjvf [downloaded file name]
This command creates a new folder and extracts the downloaded file in it.
Once the file is extracted, change the current working directory to the directory that contains the extracted files and folders.
To know the name of directory, you can use the ls command.
$ls $cd [name of the directory which contains extracted items]
In extracted items there is a directory named bin. Change current working directory to this directory.
Following figure shows above commands with the output.
In bin directory, there is an executable file named filezilla.
FileZilla can be launched by executing this executable file. To execute this file, use the following command.
This way you can use the FileZilla even without installing it.
Anytime if you feel that FileZilla is no longer required,
you can simple delete the folder that contains the extracted items and the downloaded file.
To remove the folder, use the following command.
$rm -rf [name of the folder]
